Assignments are at the arena serving your area. Three of these areas have more than one arena — New York / New Jersey and Los Angeles in particular — and you would be assigned to one of them, not all. If you are not near any of these, you can still apply — choose "Other" on the application and we will keep you on file as coverage expands.
Get paid to go to NHL games. $100 per game, your ticket and travel covered, and it's around 3–6 games a month through the season.
About us
We build structured event data sets for professional sports. Our collection team works across several leagues; this opening is for our hockey coverage. We're hiring field analysts in markets across the US and Canada.
The role
Field analysts attend assigned games in person and record what happens during the game using our mobile collection tool. Full training provided — no prior data experience required. A good fit alongside school or other work.
Assignments are NHL regular-season and preseason games at the arena nearest you. The season runs from late September through April.
Speed and accuracy are what this job is judged on. Everything else — the travel, the ticket, the schedule — is arranged around those two things. An event has to be recorded the instant it happens and it has to be right.
A record that is late is worth far less than one that is on time, and one that is wrong is worse than none at all. This is why we ask for people who genuinely know hockey: you cannot be fast if you are still working out what you just saw.
Compensation
$100 per assignment attended. Game ticket and all travel expenses fully covered, including rideshare and transit to and from the arena.
The $100 base rate is not fixed. Rates are reviewed periodically and may be adjusted up or down for future assignments based on how accurate and reliable your game records are — did you catch the events, were they on time, did you show up when scheduled. Analysts who consistently exceed the standard are moved to a higher rate.
Independent contractor. Payment within 3 days of each assignment.
What the assignment involves
- Attend assigned games in person at your local arena, ticket provided
- Record game events through the tool as they occur
- Stay for the full game, including overtime, and submit your record before leaving the arena
Requirements
- Available for regular game-day assignments through the season, and willing to travel to your assigned arena. Travel is fully covered, including rideshare and transit
- Deep passion/familiarity with hockey. We need people who have played the game or followed it closely for years — enough that reading a game is second nature. You should be able to tell what just happened on your own, immediately, without waiting for the video board, the PA announcement, or the reaction of the crowd around you. Hockey is fast and the puck is small, so this is where speed and accuracy are won or lost.
- You'll be working the game rather than watching it socially — we need your attention on the ice throughout
- Smartphone with reliable cellular data, charged to last the full game
- Dependable scheduling and responsiveness; assignments are confirmed in advance
Bonus
- Live within easy reach of an NHL arena
- Played competitively at any level — youth or travel hockey, high school, juniors, college, beer league, or semi-pro
- Longtime follower of the NHL or any major league
- Refereeing, linesman, or off-ice official experience — scorer, timekeeper or penalty box
- Coaching, scouting, statistician, or game-scoring experience
- Prior sports data collection work
